Reducing Harm from Somatic Empathy

A face2face workshop with Cindy Engel author of ‘Another Self: how your body helps you understand others’.

Do you:

·      sometimes feel overwhelmed by other people’s ‘stuff’—their emotions, aches and pains, even their thought patterns?

·      worry that your job exposes you to too much trauma, anger or anxiety?

·      live or work with someone who is physically or mentally unwell?

Although only some of us are aware of taking on others’ conditions all of us are influenced unconsciously. Over time accumulated somatic empathy can impact on our health and wellbeing. What can you do to reduce so-called vicarious harm?

The aim of this workshop is to give you evidence-based strategies to manage somatic empathy so that you can minimise negative impacts while retaining your positive sensitivity to the world.

Numbers will be strictly limited and prior booking essential.

The day will be broken into three sections and there will be regular breaks. Worksheets and handouts will be provided so that you leave the day with a booklet of material.

·      Identifying what we think is going on during our personal responses

·      Understanding a new perspective based on the latest research

·      Applying the new framework to our lives
